There’s a reason people choose to live here. It’s the quiet dignity of farmland in Alexandria. The historic charm of Belvidere. The wooded peace of Lebanon Township. The small-town pride of Phillipsburg, Bloomsbury, and Califon. This area is not just a place, it’s a way of life.
But that way of life is under siege.
There are mega-warehouse proposals popping up in small towns across New Jersey, and our Legislative District, the 23rd, is no exception. Our district spans most of Warren, North Hunterdon, and Northwest Somerset counties, and in all our conversations, we’ve yet to meet a single person who wants a warehouse in their neighborhood. Drive through our towns and you’ll see it for yourself: lawns lined with signs voicing opposition to these projects. So, if you haven’t thought about it before, ask yourself, do you want to live next to a warehouse?

(Guy Citron with local residents opposing the Jaindl warehouse project in White Twp in 2023)
The thousands of people we’ve listened to while running for State Assembly, including the 50+ residents we talked to at the Oct 9th Greenwich Twp Land Use Board meeting (where a very large warehouse is being proposed) all gave us the same answer: “No”.
And for very good reason, they are rightfully worried about trucks skipping weigh stations, cutting through main streets, and even toppling traffic lights, because it’s already happening. They’re also concerned about the constant noise, 24-hour lights, pollution, harm to wildlife, and the flooding that comes with acres of new pavement. No one wants to see their town transformed into an industrial wasteland.
Instead of chasing these “tax ratables” we should invest in what matters to our communities. We can rewrite land use laws to support local cottage industry, heritage tourism of the Revolutionary War and other historical legacies, promote agritourism like the pick-your-owns, vineyards, and farm stands. Let’s revitalize our main streets where our neighbors work and create parks and trails closer to home. Let’s protect our environment and preserve our farmland. Everyone I talk to would love to live next to all of that, wouldn’t you?
If you’d like to hear directly from residents impacted by warehouse development, or share your own experience, join us at our next town hall. Audience participation will be strongly encouraged and we hope to see you there.
